Sebastião Salgado

Sebastião Salgado Portrait

Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado is one of the world's most respected and regarded photojournalists. Educated as an economist, he began his photography career in Paris in 1973 and worked with photo agencies Sygma, Gamma, and Magnum Photos until 1994 when he and his wife Lélia Wanick Salgado, formed Amazonas Images, a Paris based agency created exclusively for his work.

Working entirely in black-and-white, Salgado's photographic projects have won numerous awards, graced publications around the world and have been presented in books and stunning exhibitions. More...

GENESIS

Genesis is a long-term photographic project in line with Sebastião Salgado's other critically acclaimed bodies of work. Looking at our planet earth, nature and its beauty, and what remains of it today despite the manifold destruction caused by human activity, Genesis is an attempt to portray the beauty and majesty of regions that are still in a pristine condition, areas where landscapes and wildlife are still unspoiled, places where human communities continue to live according to their ancient culture and traditions. Genesis is about seeing and marvelling, about understanding the necessity for the protection of all this; and finally it is about inspiring action for this preservation. The shooting of this series of photographic reportages began in 2004 and is due for completion in 2012. More...

On April 11th ILFORD Master Sebastiao Salgado's much anticipated Genesis exhibition will open its doors at the Natural History Museum in London.

Featuring 200 stunning black and white images printed on ILFORD GALERIE Prestige Gold Fibre Silk, Genesis is Salgado's third (after Workers & Migrations) and perhaps last great photographic project. The exhibition is the culmination of a photographic journey of an epic scale which began in 2004 before completion over 40 countries and 8 years later at the end of 2011. The results show a series of pictures about what is still pristine on the planet and Salgado's hope is "to do a kind of new presentation of the planet, in order to identify it and see it differently. With these pictures we are trying to see if we could understand the planet and respect it in a new way." Genesis will be in London from 11 April to 8 September 2013. For tickets, prices and details please visit the Natural History Museum website
